Casting Legacy: The Story Behind Tight Lines

A Breathtaking, Bittersweet Portrait of Legacy and Nature from Icelandic Director Gagga Jónsdóttir

This year at the Brooklyn Film Festival, Tight Lines captivated audiences with its quiet power, stunning cinematography, and heartfelt storytelling, earning Icelandic director Gagga Jónsdóttir the top honor for Feature Documentary. A previous recipient of the prestigious Edda Award, Jónsdóttir continues to prove herself as a director of visual and emotional depth, and Tight Lines is a testament to that vision. Tight Lines marked Jónsdóttir’s debut feature-length documentary, earning her both the Best New Director and Spirit Award at the Brooklyn Film Festival.

Set against the sweeping backdrop of Iceland’s largest salmon river, Laxá in Aðaldalur, Tight Lines follows four young girls, seventh-generation salmon fishing guides, as they step into their family legacy. These girls aren’t just navigating the currents of the river, but the deeper tides of tradition, identity, and environmental change.

Laxá

From the very first frame, Jónsdóttir immerses the viewer in the Icelandic landscape with breathtaking cuts of quiet, pristine nature. Before each dialogue scene, the audience is treated to cinematic stillness, the flow of the river’s water, light cutting across the green hills, and the rustle of the riverbank. It's as if the land itself is telling a story alongside the girls.

One of the subtle but beautiful elements of the film lies in the girls’ hand-knitted Icelandic wool sweaters, each bearing distinct patterns that reflect their family ties and regional heritage. Director Jónsdóttir shared that the sweaters weren’t just a visual cue for continuity in the editing room; they were a quiet reflection of the family’s roots. The sisters Arndís and Áslaug, along with their father, wore sweaters knitted in southeast Iceland by a relative on their mother’s side, while Alexandra and Andrea’s were knit in the northeast, where the story unfolds. More than a costume, the sweaters grounded the girls in place and time, especially during the cold 2023 summer when the film was shot.

Jónsdóttir shares with CrowdFlix, “I really liked the sweaters, and I asked them to wear them when filming. It also helped me with continuity in the editing room.”

Tight Lines also weaves in humor and warmth, moments of song, laughter, and playful sibling dynamics that balance its deeper commentary on environmental fragility. With salmon populations in decline, the family monitors and tests each catch to ensure it can safely return to the river. It’s a quiet act of care that echoes the larger concern for the planet’s changing climate, seen not only through data but through the lived experience of these girls and their family.

What makes Tight Lines resonate long after the credits roll is its ability to be both intimate and epic, zooming in on a family's legacy while zooming out on the ecological reality we all share. It’s a film about growing up, holding on, and letting go, and one that CrowdFlix was honored to witness at this year’s Brooklyn Film Festival.

For fans of nature, storytelling, and meaningful moments, Tight Lines is one to watch —and we hope one to collect on CrowdFlix soon.
